Overview
Tanium Direct Connect uses ScreenMeet to provide screen sharing sessions with remote endpoints. Help desk agents open a session from within Tanium Console to troubleshoot an endpoint, and can escalate between L1 and L2 support inside the same session. This article explains how the integration is structured, how licensing works, and how ScreenMeet roles are assigned when you provision users in Tanium.
This article is for administrators and agents who access ScreenMeet Remote Support through Tanium Console. Screen sharing sessions are initiated from Tanium, and the live session runs in ScreenMeet.
How the Integration Works
When you purchase the ScreenMeet offering through Tanium, you initiate all screen sharing interactions from Tanium Console. Tanium deploys the ScreenMeet client to the endpoint using a Tanium Action, the client connects to ScreenMeet services, and control is handed to the Tanium Console operator. When the session connects, your screen switches to the ScreenMeet interface within Tanium, where you use ScreenMeet Support Tools to run commands, tasks, and tools on the endpoint.
Provisioning Happens in Tanium
Screen sharing is enabled by purchasing the ScreenMeet offering through Tanium, and all sessions are initiated from Tanium Console. More information is surfaced in the Tanium documentation at Tanium Direct Connect User Guide: Working with screen sharing.
Role Assignment
You set up screen sharing users in Tanium. When you assign a Tanium screen sharing role, ScreenMeet automatically assigns the matching ScreenMeet role:
Tanium Role | Assigned ScreenMeet Role | Capability |
|---|---|---|
|
| Change settings, features, and policies; access data; join active sessions; open the ScreenMeet console to configure organization settings. |
|
| Start sessions and use standard ScreenMeet features; access the ScreenMeet console without modifying organization settings. |
For the full permission breakdown, including the permissions that control unattended sessions, see Screen Sharing User Role Permissions.
Licensing
Screen sharing uses per-operator licenses. Obtain licenses based on the number of Tanium Console operators you expect to establish sessions. Licensing behaves as follows:
A per-operator license is allocated to each operator who establishes a session or opens the ScreenMeet console from Tanium Console.
Each operator can create unlimited concurrent sessions.
An allocation lasts 30 days and counts as an active operator license. The 30-day period restarts each time the operator establishes a session or opens the ScreenMeet console.
If the active operator license count exceeds your total per-seat count, additional operators cannot establish a session.
Opening the Console Consumes a License
Opening the ScreenMeet console from Tanium Console allocates a per-operator license to your account even if you do not start a session. Keep this in mind when reviewing license usage.
Availability
Screen sharing is not available in Tanium Cloud for U.S. Government. If your instance moves in Tanium Account, your organization settings are reset and session history is lost.
